Most orthodontic issues can be resolved quickly. Here's what to do in common emergency situations.

Office Hours for Emergencies

Monday - Thursday: 8:00am - 5:00pm
Friday: 8:00am - 2:00pm
After Hours: Leave a message and we'll return your call as soon as possible

For true dental emergencies (severe trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing), please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

Common Orthodontic Emergencies

Loose or Broken Bracket

Moderate

What to do:

  1. If the bracket is still attached to the wire, leave it in place
  2. Cover with orthodontic wax if it's causing discomfort
  3. Call our office during business hours to schedule a repair
  4. If the bracket has come off completely, save it in a safe place and bring it to your appointment

Poking Wire

Moderate

What to do:

  1. Try pushing the wire back into place with a clean pencil eraser
  2. If that doesn't work, cover the wire with orthodontic wax
  3. You can also use a small piece of wet cotton or gauze

Lost or Broken Wire

High

What to do:

  1. Try to preserve the wire if possible and keep it safe
  2. Cover any sharp edges with orthodontic wax
  3. Call our office as soon as possible for a same-day or next-day appointment
  4. Do not attempt to cut the wire yourself

Lost or Broken Aligner

Moderate

What to do:

  1. If you've already moved to the next set, continue wearing those
  2. If not, wear your previous set until we can provide replacements
  3. Call our office immediately to order a replacement
  4. Never go without wearing aligners for extended periods

Severe Pain or Swelling

Emergency

What to do:

  1. Call our office immediately - we offer same-day emergency appointments
  2. Take over-the-counter pain medication as directed
  3. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling
  4. If swelling is severe or you have difficulty breathing, seek immediate medical attention

Loose Band or Spacer

Low

What to do:

  1. If a spacer falls out, save it and call our office
  2. A loose band should be reported at your next appointment unless it causes pain
  3. Do not try to remove or adjust it yourself
  4. Call if you experience any discomfort
